Mega Labels

In contrast to most common fluorescent labels Mega labels are characterized by a large gap between excitation and emission wavelength. This property minimizes background fluorescence resulting from scattered excitation light or autofluorescence. It also enables parallel visualization or measurement of different targets in one sample without any variation of excitation light. Mega labels can be excited with argon lasers or other widely used light sources in the same manner, but the individual fluorescence of each Megal label varies. Mega labels, if combined with Atto labels, enable the visualization of different structures with just one excitation source. Such label combinations can be used with fluorescence microscopes, using a mercury lamp and standard filter sets optimized for conventional fluorophores. The small size of these labels and the direct conversion of excitation light into emission without the use of a FRET mechanism are crucial advantages for applications like fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence in situ hybridization.
