Antibodies and Kits to Cyclic Nucleotides

Cyclic nucleotides are nucleotides having a ring structure with a phosphate group bonded to two of the sugar′s hydroxyl groups. Examples include cyclic AMP (cAMP), and cyclic GMP (cGMP). These cyclic nucleotides function as secondary messengers to relay extracellular signals within the cell. Cyclic nucleotides directly activate cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels (CNG channels) in cell membranes by binding to a site on the channel protein. Cyclic nucleotides respond to some extent to both cAMP and cGMP and are important for sensory transduction and cellular development. They regulate and coordinate metabolism in response to hormones and neurotransmitters, which are the extracellular first messengers in regulatory pathways.

Cyclic nucleotides acting as secondary messengers may play a role in some disease states and can be identified and measured by using the appropriate antibodies. Sigma-Aldrich offers several research products such as antibodies and immunoassay kits for the quantitation of cAMP and cGMP in tissue and cell cultures.
