AIDS and Viral Research Reagents

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the final stage of a disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV/AIDS causes severe damage to the immune system, and a variety of treatments are able to keep symptoms at bay and improve the quality of life. Antiretroviral drugs can stop the virus from multiplying, prevent the progress of the disease, improve T-cell counts, and help the immune system. Viruses are responsible for other infectious diseases like the common cold, influenza, rabies, and measles. Viruses known as oncoviruses contribute to certain forms of cancer. While vaccination provides one treatment option to prevent some viral diseases, another option is the development of antiviral drugs . The first such drug was interferon, produced by immune cells to stimulate other aspects of the immune system.
