Steroids comprise a large number of hormonal substances sharing a similar basic chemical structure and originating mainly in the adrenal cortex and gonads. Steroids include sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, as well as corticosteroids, D vitamins, and cholesterol, the main building block of steroid hormones. Anabolic steroids are a category of drugs that increase protein synthesis within cells, which results in the buildup and repair of cellular tissue (anabolism), especially in muscles. Anabolic steroids are also used to stimulate bone growth and appetite, induce male puberty, and are prescribed for patients with chronic conditions such as cancer and AIDS.
In addition to offering androgens, estrogens, and corticosteroids, Sigma-Aldrich has a broad range of products to support research on many other steroid hormones and their effects on the body, including cell signaling and hormone metabolism. Steroid products include synthetic hormones, hormone modulators, and growth factors.
