Prostaglandins

Prostaglandins (PGs) contain 20 carbon atoms (iecosanoid), a 5-carbon ring, a hydroxyl group and a trans double bond. PGs are synthesized biologically from arachidonic acid in most animal cells. They serve as short-lived localmessengers, sending strong paracrine or autocrine signals before being inactivated. Prostaglandins, their analogs, derivatives, and metabolites, are potent and selective inhibitors or agonists for many enzymes, and thus affect many physiological processes. Prostaglandins are involved in inflammation (including pain, fever and swelling), muscle contraction/relaxation, platelet clumping, cancer, glaucoma, hypertension, cardiovascular funtions, allergy, asthma, labor, and more.
