Cyclic Nucleotide Metabolism Enzymes

Enzymes are proteins that function as organic catalysts involved in, but not changed by, biochemical reactions. There are over 3000 known enzymes, each of which increases the rate of a specific chemical reaction. For example, they help break down food and they are involved in blood clotting. In enzymatic reactions, the molecules at the beginning of the process (substrates) are converted into different molecules (products). Enzyme activity is affected by temperature, pressure, chemical environment (e.g., pH), and the concentration of substrate. Activity is also affected by other molecules; many drugs and poisons are enzyme inhibitors. Control mechanisms regulate the rate at which new enzymes are synthesized. Most of these controls work by turning the transcription of genes on or off.

Sigma-Aldrich has products for enzyme-related research, such as protein kinases and the phosphodiesterase family of proteins that play a critical role in regulating intracellular levels of cAMP and cGMP.
