Cyclic Nucleotides and Analogs

A cyclic nucleotide results when the phosphate group bonds to two of the sugar′s hydroxyl groups, forming a cyclical (ring) structure. Examples include cyclic AMP (cAMP), cyclic GMP (cGMP), and cyclic ADP-ribose. These cyclic nucleotides act as intracellular secondary messengers whose levels are regulated by primary extracellular messengers such as hormones and neurotransmitters that influence their respective regulatory pathways. Cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channels (CNG channels) found in the membranes of various tissues and cells respond to the binding of cyclic nucleotides cAMP and cGMP. CNG channels are involved in sensory transduction as well as cellular development, and are found in the brain, the heart, the kidneys, and the gonads. Cyclic nucleotides control the activity of several proteins within cells to regulate and coordinate metabolism.
