Figure-3b

Cargo Import by the Importinα-Importinβ Pathway

In this schematic, the cargo binds to an adapter protein, importinα, rather than directly to the carrier protein. The cargo-importinα- importinβ complex is then disassembled in the nucleus by RanGTP. Importinβ returns to the cytoplasm till it is again assembled into a complex with cargo and importinα. The importinα requires a carrier protein for nuclear export called CAS. Assembly of this export complex requires RanGTP. The ternary importinα-CAS-RanGTP complex is then disassembled in the cytoplasm by GTP hydrolysis.
