mRNP Transport through the Nuclear Pore Complex (NPC)

The NPC consists of FG (phenylalanine-glycine)-repeat containing nucleoporins (FG Nups), as well as other nuclear and non-nuclear proteins including at least two nucleoporins, Nup153 and Nup358 containing zinc-finger domains and Ran-binding domains. mRNA is associated with the Mex67/Tap and Mtr2/p15 heterodimer (also known as the general mRNA export receptor) for transport from the nucleus. Mex67/Tap is characterized by the presence of LRR (Leucine-Rich Repeat), M (Middle-) and C (C-terminal-) domains. It is this heterodimer that binds directly to the FG-Nups lining the NPC and providing transient docking sites as the mRNP traverses the nuclear basket and is released from the cytoplasmic fibrils.
