Sera

New Zealand & Australian Sera

Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) provides many non-defined growth promoting and survival enhancing factor to cells in culture. FBS is a byproduct of the meat industry. Its supply can therefore be influenced by factors such as climate and shifts in socioeconomic patterns. Until relatively recently, drought conditions in the US forced farmers to reduce the size of their herds, resulting in the US cattle population falling to their lowest levels in over 60 years. However, farmers are now rebuilding their herds, resulting in far fewer cattle going to market. The end result is that the availability of US origin FBS is >40% down over what was previously regarded as the annual collection volume.

In response to the current shortage of US origin FBS, and to ensure your research is uninterrupted, we have expanded our serum portfolio to include New Zealand and Australian Origin FBS.

Australian & New Zealand origin sera carry the best possible rating in relation to Geographical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) Risk (GBR) as designated by the Scientific Steering Committee on the Geographical Risk of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. The classification for Australia and New Zealand are GBR Level I.
