Filtration
- Passage through a 0.22 µm membrane minimizes bacteria, molds, and other contaminants
|
Dialysis
- Toxic synthesis, cleavage, deprotection, and purification solvents and salts are exchanged for those that are physiologically acceptable

Conductivity Measurements
- Dialysis ensures that salts are in the range of 10 – 100 µS m-1 at a 50 µM concentration
|
Endotoxin Testing
- 1 EU mg-1 is the upper limit allowed (values are typically in the range of 0.1 – 1 EU mg-1)
- Endotoxin testing (LAL assay) detects LPS, a constituent molecule found in the outer membrane of gram negative bacteria
- LPS must be below an acceptable threshold, or the host will die from toxic shock
