Phycology and Ecotoxicity Products

Although algae contain chlorophyll and can perform photosynthesis, they are not classified as true plants. Algae grow in fresh water, seawater, and very moist environments, and so are cultured differently from either plants or bacteria. We supply Bold’s modified nutrient medium for growing freshwater algae, and Guillard’s (F/2) marine nutrient medium with and without silicate. For reconstitution of F/2, we offer sterile filtered seawater, or an artificial sea salt mixture. Cultivation of oil producing fresh water algae may eventually prove a major source of biofuels. In contrast, algae can cause ecological problems, as when overgrowth of red algae results in red tides.
