Sigma-Aldrich offers a wide range of protease inhibitors to ensure that proteolytic degradation does not occur during plant cell lysis and protein extraction.
Protease inhibitors are molecules that inhibit the function of a large group of naturally occurring enzymes called proteases. Protease inhibitors prevent proteases from splitting proteins into peptides. Proteases can either break specific peptide bonds or break down a complete peptide to amino acids (unlimited proteolysis).
During plant protein isolation procedures, proteases can quickly degrade proteins and drastically reduce their yield for purification. Sigma-Aldrich’s protease inhibitor cocktails have been optimized to maintain and preserve protein functionality following cell lysis and are available in powder, DMSO solution, or tablet form. They are proprietary blends of protease inhibitors specific for plant cells. SIGMAFAST™ protease inhibitor cocktail tablets are EDTA-free for use in purification of metal-dependent and Histidine-tagged proteins. Actions include the inhibition of serine, cysteine, aspartic, metalloproteases, and aminopeptidases.
