Cells secrete various types of proteins that create an intercalated mesh comprising a tissue-specialized extracellular matrix (ECM).
Sigma® offers a broad portfolio of three-dimensional cell culture systems including HyStem™ Cell Culture Scaffolds, MaxGel™ human Extracellular Matrix (ECM), HydroMatrix™ synthetic peptide, and mouse ECM, to support stem cell and other cell cultures. These products provide three-dimensional environments in which cells are better able to mimic their in vivo counterparts.
- Culture cells in a way that resembles their in vivo environments
- Promote cell growth and migration to support the proliferation of stem cell and other mammalian cells
- Reduced level of growth factors promotes lot-to-lot consistency
3-D Stem Cell Matrices
3-D cell culture scaffolds are a more accurate representation of the natural environment experienced by the cells in the living organism as opposed to growing cells on flat surfaces. Reflecting natural conditions allows for intercellular interactions with more realistic biochemical and physiological responses. In a 3-D environment, cells behave and respond more like they would in vivo to internal and external stimuli, such as changes in temperature, pH, nutrient absorption, transport, and differentiation. The power of regenerative medicine provides the means to understanding numerous intriguing cellular progressions such as development, aging, and tissue rejuvenation. The only way to understand these fascinating processes in biology is to study model systems that truly resemble those in the organism, making 3-D cell culture imperative.
