Magnetic Materials

Magnetic materials can be regarded as indispensable in modern technology. They are components of many electomechanical and electronic devices. For instance, an average home contains numerous devices such as cellphones, ipods, ipads, laptops, CD players, Credit/debit cards etc., which use magnetic materials. They are also used in a wide range of industrial and medical equipment from MRIs to magnetic seperators.

One of the important uses of magnetic materials is in the form of permanent magnets, which are essential in devices for storing energy in a static magnetic field. Sigma-Aldrich offers several permanent magnets based on Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt, Samarium-Cobalt, and Neodymium-Iron-Boron Alloys. Owing to strong magnetic anisotropies the rare-earth based magnets show a higher energy product (BHmax), compared to that of Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt magnets. BHmax is one of the important figures of merit for permanent magnets representing the magnetic energy density of a material. However, Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt magnets have a higher Curie temperature of the compared to rare-earth based magnets which indicates an increased maximum operating temperature.

Magnetic materials have also been used to reach ultra low temperatures (<<1K) by using adiabatic demagnetization phenomenon. Recently, it has been demonstrated that magnetic materials can also be used for refrigeration applications near room temperatures. Sigma-Aldrich offers several rare earth magnets such as the alloy Gd5Si2Ge2. Owing to the unusually strong response to the external magnetic field, this alloy is under intense scrutiny as a potential room temperature magnetic refrigerant material. Sigma Aldrich also offers the rare-earth based intermetallic compounds Gd5Si0.5Ge3.5 and Dy0.8Er0.2Al2 which exhibit excellent magnetic refrigerant properties below liquid nitrogen temperatures.
