Our HistoryFrom small beginnings, an industry leader was born.
Products had become scarce during the depression and the needs in the US Midwest presented a market opportunity. In 1934, two chemical engineers, Aaron Fischer and Bernard Fischlowitz formed a partnership to parent the newly formed Sigma Chemical Company, which manufactured cosmetics, shoe dressings and cardboard adhesives. Later during World War II, Sigma became the leading manufacturer of the sugar substitute Saccharin.
Acting on the premise that chemists needed a wider array of research chemicals and better service, Alfred Bader and Jack Eisendrath founded Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc. in 1951. This premise carried the company through international expansion in 1959 and is with the company today.
Both companies pursued a common mission of advancing research through their products, which was also reflected in their respective mission statements “It is a pleasure doing business with Sigma” and “Chemists helping Chemists” at Aldrich. Both Sigma and Aldrich grew independently servicing two different types of researchers - Sigma serving primarily Biochemists and Aldrich Serving Organic Chemists. Thus began a long tradition of trust and brand loyalty between researchers and the two companies.
Sigma and Aldrich merged in 1975, joining the leading biochemical company with the leading organic chemical company, to create Sigma-Aldrich, Inc.
