Analytical Method: Aniline in wastewater

Reagents and instruments:

Folded filter

Waterbath
 
Reagent 1:
Dissolve 40 g sodium nitrite in 60 ml water
 
Reagent 2:
Dissolve 15 g amidosulfuric acid in 85 ml water.
 
Reagent 3:
N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NEDDC)
 
Measurement range:
0.5 - 8.0 mg/l Aniline at cell length 16 mm and 550 nm
 
Sample preparation:
The sample solution must be clear; if not, filter through a folded filter or a membrane filter.
 
Analysis:
Adjust the clear sample to pH 2-3 with hydrochloric acid and place 5.0 ml in an empty cell. Close off the cell and cool in an ice bath for 3 minutes. Add 0.10 ml reagent 1 and mix and 2.0 ml of reagent 2 and shake vigorously for 30 s. Add approx. 10 mg of reagent 3 and mix. Close off the cell and heat in a water bath for 5 minutes at 60 °C. Allow to cool at room temperature for 10 minutes, dry the cell and measure at 550 nm (in SQ 118 against distilled water) in a round cell.
