Sodium carbonate solution 20 %, hydrous solution:
Dissolve 20 g sodium carbonate in 100 ml water for analysis.
 
Silver nitrate 0.2 %, hydrous solution:
Dissolve 0.2 g silver nitrate in 100 ml water for analysis.
 
Sample preparation:
Depending on the expected content of manganese mix 100 - 250 mg of the sample, dried to constant weight at 105 °C, with 2.5 g potassium hydrogen sulfate in a Duran- or Pyrex test tube. In the tube melt the salt mixture by heating it with a rustling gas flame, until the melting looks orange red and clear (about 5 minutes).
After cooling dissolve the salt melting with some water for analysis in a glass beaker in a bath of hot water and transfer quantitatively into a 200-ml Erlenmeyer flask with water for analysis. Add 0.5 g potassium peroxodisulfate and 0.5 ml silver nitrate solution 0.2 % in water and boil it for 30 minutes, keeping the volume. After cooling add 10 ml sodium carbonate solution 20 % in water, transfer it into a 100-ml volumetric flask, fill up to volume with water for analysis and mix. After the iron hydroxide deposit has settled, use the clear project in the flask for the determination of manganese.
 
Analysis:
Determine with the above mentioned test kits.
 
Calculation:

Manganese (total) content in % = analysis value in mg/l Mn x 10
weight of sample in mg
