Sample preparation:
In a test tube place about 100 mg of finely powdered sampling material together with 2 g of ammonium chloride for analysis and mix well. Then heat over a flame to complete sublimation (fume cupboard!). In the upper third of the tube a white sublimate will be found, in the midportion, an orange-yellow, whilst the lower zone is clear of siliceous residue.
Add, after cooling, about 1 g of ascorbic acid for analysis and 5 ml of water for analysis and heat for a short period. Then transfer the solution to a 1000-ml standard volumetric flask, fill up to the mark with water for analysis and mix well.
 
Analysis:
Determine with the above mentioned test kits.
 
Calculation:

Manganese (total) content in % =   analysis value in mg/l Mn x 100
weight of sample in mg
