Click on a link to find out what our employees think of the Sigma-Aldrich Culture:
Country Manager
“The culture of Sigma-Aldrich UK is one of putting the customer at the centre of everything we do, we have an obsession with service and making it as easy as possible for our customers to do business with us. We are also dedicated to people development; we aim to hire the best people, to continually develop our talent and to retain our best performers through reward, recognition and advanced training. A culture of process improvement in everything we do is embedded in our organization and this is reflected in the company wide adoption of the principles of Lean and Six Sigma as well as the Model for Improvement Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA). We have core values in terms of safety, treating our employees and our customers with respect and dignity, and conducting our business in an environmentally responsible and ethical manner at all times.”
Human Resources Specialist
“Working for Sigma-Aldrich has allowed me to develop my skills through promotions, professional qualifications and exposure to new aspects of business on a regular basis. I have been given many opportunities to embark on new things which have been of benefit not only to the organization but also to me on a personal level. Being part of a company that operates in around 35 countries with approximately 6,800 employees worldwide gives me a feeling of security in the knowledge that any organization who can operate successfully in the global economy must have sound foundations. Although Sigma-Aldrich is not a household name I feel a sense of pride when I see one of our products being used on television and it is something my whole family look out for. It is sometimes hard to explain to family and friends what a company like Sigma-Aldrich does so it really helps to put it in context when someone uses our product in a laboratory or hospital during a TV programme. The fact is that our products touch everyday people in a lot of ways, whether it be as one of the ingredients in the medication they are taking or as the cleaning regime in a piece of equipment that is used to test blood samples, it gives me a great sense of achievement to be part of the Sigma-Aldrich family.”
Learning & Development Manager
“From a development point of view, Sigma-Aldrich is an opportunity rich company. There is lots of scope to get involved with new projects and new initiatives, enabling individuals to stretch and grow both commercially and personally. This is underpinned by a real desire in developing our own talent base and maximizing people's potential. I've learnt more here in one year than in five years at my previous company.”
Business Analyst
“The biggest thing for me, and the most noticeable, about working at Sigma compared to other places is the minimal divide there is between different hierarchy levels. All managers operate in an open door style environment and all are as approachable as any other co worker. It does not matter what department or what level (hierarchy/grade) people are on, it is very much a level playing field. I think this not only creates respect but also encourages people to speak out with new ideas and to question what is regarded as 'the norm'. This is certainly the case in the Poole office and is driven by John's approach. There are no barriers of interaction between different employee levels, groups and departments. I think its difficult for me to comment too much on the social culture at Sigma as I think it would be far more worthwhile to ask someone who applied for a job here based on it being Sigma and who moved down to the area for the job - e.g. someone technical/with scientific background. I took the job through a local agency and was looking for any type of work. That said, it is apparent (and was the case for me) that all new starters fit in quickly regardless of the type of person they are - I have seen very few people leave not long after joining. For me, I was quickly taken under the wing of my team and it became clear that I was going to fit in. It also became clear that although I took the job with no expectations at all, there was a great deal of encouragement within the company to develop yourself and progress your career - hence why I'm still here.”
SAFC Sales Specialist
“The culture at SIAL is one focused on developing people to achieve personal goals. It’s very hard to succeed in life without people that are committed to helping you develop, to make the company stronger. In my experience, SIAL employees have always supported and shared knowledge or experience to make each other successful. That is pretty rare in a sales driven company and something we should all be proud of.” (SAFC Sales Specialist)
Account Manager (Expatriate) This month is my 10th year with Sigma. All I can say it has been the best part of my career working for Sigma, my colleagues in SA that I have worked with for years are like family and moving over to the UK has been great, everybody has been really friendly and willing to help and made me feel part of the Sigma Family on this side.
Technical Services Supervisor
“The very nature of the type of organisation that Sigma-Aldrich is means that it offers many opportunities for its employees. Since joining the company I have had the chance to work in several different departments, in a variety of roles. The people who work here are proud of their company and create a fantastic environment to work in. You can tell that people enjoy working here based on their length of service. The company has a strong focus on personal development and views its people as its number one asset.”
Sales Manager
Sigma-Aldrich supports personal development and career progression. It is an innovative company who supports creative outside the box ideas and grass levels ideas have been developed and used throughout the corporation. I am inspired by colleagues, by their wealth of knowledge, passion for achievement and breadth of experience that is used across the Sigma-Aldrich business which generates new ideas, challenges the norm and delivers high performance.”
Global Market Segment Manager
“I have been working for Sigma Aldrich for 8 years during which time I have been fortunate enough to have 4 role changes. I started my career as a Senior Chemist, was promoted to Team Leader, then a radical change to Inside Sales Manager and recently, Global Market Segment Manager. All these things point to the fact that Sigma is very proactive in recognising people's strengths and challenging them in ways that they never thought possible. They have a strong personal development program that is laced with a support network of not only your piers but also the hierarchy of the company. Sigma is keen to develop and stretch its employees and has an open and friendly culture such that my opinions and views will be listened to without prejudice. If you are looking for diversity, challenges and a unique experience, it is a great place to start your career.” Analytical Sales Specialist “It means a lot to me working for Sigma-Aldrich. I have always held Sigma-Aldrich in very high regard, right from the time I had my first laboratory job. I was working on a project where I often had to order speciality chemicals late in the day and I knew that Sigma-Aldrich would have them with me the next day. I've worked for a couple of our competitors and Sigma-Aldrich were always the company that were hardest to beat when it comes to customer service. A career with Sigma-Aldrich is truly that, whereas at other companies I've felt like I've just been doing a job. I feel as if everyone is moving in the same direction at Sigma-Aldrich, that we're all part of the same team and as such I feel that my contribution is valued by the organisation. One of the tangible ways that the company has demonstrated this is by ensuring that the training I have received is of the highest quality. I also feel that I am trusted to plan my own workload and one of my colleagues summed it up by saying once that "working for Sigma-Aldrich is the closest you could get to being self-employed but without the risk." While I am left to get on with my work, I do, however, always know that support is always readily available from all departments within the company.”
