RAFT Polymerization Lecture

Dr. Ezio Rizzardo, Chief Scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), presents an overview of Reversible Addition Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) Polymerization and highlighting recent advances, such as switchable RAFT agents. In the lecture, Dr. Rizzardo explains the different categories of RAFT agents and their compatibilities with different monomers. These RAFT agents enable scientists to synthesize a wide range of polymers with low polydispersity, tailored end-group functionality, new block copolymer compositions, and a variety of other complex architectures. In addition, a new class of switchable RAFT agents are described that allow for the polymerization of different classes of monomers via protonation/deprotonation that were previously inaccessible by other polymerization agents.

Additional RAFT Resources

In addition to the video lecture presented by Dr. Ezio Rizzardo, Aldrich Materials Science also has a number of other RAFT-related resources available:

  • RAFT Agent to Monomer Compatibility Table – This popular table from Aldrich's RAFT technology spotlight helps users select the appropriate RAFT agent for a given monomer.
  • RAFT Polymerization Micro-Review – Dr. Graeme Moad, Dr. Ezio Rizzardo and Dr. San Thang present a micro-review on RAFT polymerization in Material Matters™ Vol. 5, No. 1.
  • Controlled Radical Polymerization Webinar – Prof. Karen L. Wooley discusses RAFT polymerization and other living radical polymerization techniques in her talk titled "Complex Macromolecular and Nanoscale Structures by Combinations of Living Radical and Ring Opening Polymerizations."
