TESTIMONIALS FROM KEY OPINION LEADERS
Dr. Leonardo Lopes da Luz
Doctor in Tropical Medicine and Public Health, specializing in Immunology, from the Federal University of Goiás (2023), Master's in Microbial Biology, specializing in Virology, from the University of Brasília (2019), and Bachelor's in Biotechnology from the Federal University of Goiás (2016). He serves as a collaborating professor and Post-Doctoral researcher in the Graduate Program in Tropical Medicine and Public Health (PPGMTSP) at UFG.
Areas of Expertise
He has experience in the following areas and their respective research lines: Virology (expression of recombinant antigens using plants and insect cells - Zika, Dengue, and Hepatitis Delta); Molecular Biology (development of point-of-care testing platforms for rapid detection of DNA from public health pathogens, cloning, and PCR); Applied Immunology: development and production of serological diagnostics based on ELISA and Lateral Flow Immunochromatography (point-of-care testing - POCT) for infectious and parasitic diseases, mainly Leprosy, COVID-19, and Listeriosis. In the field of Leprosy, he focuses on early diagnosis and the development of new rapid molecular diagnostics for implementation in the SUS (Brazilian Unified Health System). He participated in a training project aimed at implementing the rapid ML Flow test for the detection of IgM antibodies against Mycobacterium leprae in the SUS (2021). He contributes to the improvement of serological assays using biotin and streptavidin-based systems. Currently, he is part of the Innovation Hub in Point of Care Technologies (POCT Hub), a partnership between UFG and the German company Merck SA, aimed at strengthening the productive capacity of the industry and its technological independence. This is achieved through the generation of specialized labor and the development of rapid tests of market interest. In addition, he serves as an Academic Consultant in teaching scientific methodology for the preparation of academic works.

Dr. Marcio Vinicius de Carvalho Barros Côrtes
Marcio Côrtes obtained his Bachelor’s degree (BSc.) in Pharmacy from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2005. He earned his Master's degree (MSc.) in Biochemistry (Biotechnology) in 2009, with the dissertation: "Enantioselective production of R-(-)-3-aminoisobutyric acid using Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a bioconversion agent." In 2021, he received his Doctorate (PhD.) in Biochemistry (Biotechnology) with the thesis: "Development of new biopesticides: genetic improvement and efficient production system," both from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 2021, he completed a Sandwich Doctorate period at the Technical University of Denmark in the Eukaryotic Molecular Cell Biology Laboratory, Section for Synthetic Biology, Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, where he worked on Gene Editing of Aspergillus sp. using CRISPR systems, both for the development/validation of new CRISPR systems and the analysis of gene clusters related to secondary metabolite synthesis. He currently leads genetic improvement projects, via gene editing, of biological control agents and growth promoters.
Areas of Expertise
He has worked on the optimization and scale-up of production processes for biological control agents and growth promoters via submerged fermentation and the quality control and management of these processes. He is a co-creator and currently responsible for the BioFabLab at Embrapa Rice and Beans. He served as an advisor to the General Management and R&D of Embrapa Rice and Beans from 2016 to 2017, and was a supervisor/manager of the Agricultural Microbiology Laboratory from 2009 to 2015. He has received excellence awards from Embrapa and was awarded a Sandwich Doctorate scholarship from PrInt-UFRJ-CAPES. In 2023, he received the Otávio Lage de Siqueira Agribusiness Merit Medal, awarded by the City Council of Goiânia, GO. He has delivered lectures and participated in interviews mainly on the topic: the importance of quality management in the production processes of microbial biological inputs. He is a co-advisor for Master's and Doctorate students in the PPGBq-UFRJ and PPGAgronomy-UFG programs. He also mentors undergraduate students, primarily in the Biotechnology-UFG and Pharmacy-UFG programs. He has published over 40 scientific articles and other technical-scientific publications. He has developed processes for gene editing of filamentous fungi and bacteria using marker-free CRISPR systems.
