FliC (flagellin) is the subunit protein which polymerizes to form the filaments of bacterial flagella. The protein has four-domains (D0, D1, D2, D3).

The encoded flagellin filament contains 55 kDa monomers.

Ações bioquímicas/fisiológicas

FliC (flagellin) can activate the innate immune system by TLR5 (toll like receptor 5) and is an important proinflammatory molecule. FliC also induces the production of antibodies and is identified as an antigen by CD⁴⁺ T cells.

It also stimulates the production of proinflammatory mediators : nitric oxide, interleukin 1 (IL-1), IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor α.
