General description

Maltodextrin is a saccharide polymer that can be classified as a carbohydrate. It can be produced by acid hydrolysis of the starch. The powdered material formed after purification and spray drying can be used in a variety of food and beverage products. It can be used as a good source of energy in food products with a value of 16 kJ/g.[1][2]

Application

Maltodextrin can be used as a binding additive for 3D printing manufacturing.[3] It can be used as a forming agent in the preparation of soya bean sprout extract.[4]

Features and Benefits

  • High purity grade for sensitive applications due to its consistent quality and minimal impurities with change notification enabled
  • Biocompatible - Safe for use in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications due to its non-toxic nature.
  • Supplied in powder form, for easy handling, storage, and seamless integration into dry formulations or reconstitution in solution.
  • Low Dextrose Equivalent (4-7) ensuring consistent formulation with higher viscosity and better emulsification

Questions

1–8 of 8 Questions
  1. Is this maltodextrin digestion-resistant or digestible?

    1 answer
    1. Maltodextrin is generally considered to be digestible, as it is a carbohydrate that can be broken down and absorbed by the body. However, the specific properties can vary depending on the source and processing of the maltodextrin. Please note that this product is intended for research use only and is not suitable for any other purpose, including unauthorized commercial use, in vitro diagnostic use, or therapeutic use in humans or animals.

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. Is maltodextrin consist of linear glucose polymer with alpha 1,4 glycosidic bond? Or is there any branches?

    1 answer
    1. This maltodextrin is a nonsweet, nutritive saccharide olymers that consist of D-glucose units linked primarily by alpha-1-4 bonds, having a dextrose equivalent (DE) range of 4.0 - 7.0. The degree of branching has not been determined.

  5. What is the Molecular weight of this product?

    1 answer
    1. The molecular weight of this product is estimated to be approximately 3600 daltons.

  6. how can i increase the DE value of glucose syrup using maltodextrin (DE value 9-12)? example: 42 DE Glucose syrup is available but i need a 62 DE glucose syrup. What is the ratio of maltodextrin and glucose syrup?

    1 answer
    1. The DE range of this product is 4 - 7. The highest DE value Maltodextrin product offered is product number 419680, with a DE range of 15 - 20. See the link below to review this product:
      https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/US/en/product/aldrich/419680

In addition, please see this paper below regarding the DE value of glucose syrup:
      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6257794/

In this reference, only maltodextrin with a DE value higher than 42 can increase glucose syrup with a DE of 42 to 62. There may likely be difficulties increasing the DE value directly using these products. There may be an indirect impact as increasing viscosity and/or solid content may in turn increase the DE. Please continue to review the literature for additional information regarding this process.

  7. How does the Dextrose Equivalent value relate to polymer size?

    1 answer
    1. Dextrose equivalency (DE) is inversely related to the size of the polymer (sugar). For example, a Maltodextrin product with a DE value of 4.0-7.0, such as product 419672, would have a larger molecular size compared to one with a value of 16.5-19.5, like product 419699.

  8. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.
