Centrifugal Filters
Filtration devices can be used to concentrate small to large volume biological and environmental samples in preparation for downstream processing and analysis. Several filter properties should be considered in selection:
- MWCO or NMWL: In general, the molecular weight cut off (MWCO) or nominal molecular weight limit (NMWL) of the membrane filter should be one half to one third of the size of target protein for retention.
- Filter Material: Regenerated cellulose membranes have low protein adsorption and feature low extractables, supporting high sample recovery for protein and biological samples. Hydrophilic PVDF membranes exhibit very low protein binding and are used to clarify protein solutions. Hydrophilic PTFE membranes have high strength and are typically used in clarifying aqueous solutions. Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes offer high flow rates for faster filtration. Cellulose acetate membranes are hydrophobic and may require pre-wetting for use with aqueous samples. Nylon membranes exhibit higher protein binding but have higher chemical resistance and lower extractables.
- Working Volume: Centrifugal filtration devices have specified starting volumes, typically accommodating anywhere form 0.5 mL to 70 mL of sample. Pressurized filtration devices can accommodate larger volumes ranging from 50 mL to >400 ml.
- Final Volume: Many filtration devices utilize a dead stop technology to prevent drying out of sample. The final volume of the device can be used to determine concentration factor.

Our Ultrafree® centrifugal filters with microporous Durapore® PVDF membranes are available in both sterile and non-sterile versions with 0.1 µm, 0.22 µm, 0.45 µm, 0.65 µm, and 5 µm pore sizes for 0.5 mL and 2 mL working sample volumes.
Hydrophilic PTFE Membrane Centrifugal Filters
Ultrafree® Centrifugal Filters with hydrophilic PTFE Membranes
Ultrafree® centrifugal filters with hydrophilic PTFE membranes can be used to remove particles and precipitates from both aqueous and some solvent-based samples. Our Ultrafree® centrifugal filters with microporous hydrophilic PTFE membranes are available non-sterile with 0.22 um and 0.45 um pore sizes for 0.4 mL and 2 mL working sample volumes.
Polyethersulfone (PES) Membrane Centrifugal Filters
Microcon® Centrifugal Filters with Biomax® PES Membranes
Microcon® centrifugal filters are designed to concentrate and desalt low volume (≤ 0.5 mL) protein and nucleic acid solutions using our Biomax® PES membrane. With typical recoveries >95%, reverse spin technology enables you to maximize retrieval even with lowest volume samples.
Vivaspin® Centrifugal Concentrators
Vivaspin® ultrafiltration centrifugal concentrators have a vertical membrane design that provides high flow rates and high recoveries. A dead-stop technology prevents drying out of samples and direct recovery of the concentrate without further re-spins. They are offered in a wide range of MWCO from 2 kDa – 0.2 μm. PES high flux membranes offer retentate recovery >90%.
- Vivaspin® 500: 100 µL to 500 µL sample volumes
- Vivaspin® 2: 0.4 mL to 2 mL samples
- Vivaspin® 4: 2 mL to 15 mL samples
- Vivaspin® 6: 2 mL to 6 mL samples
- Vivapsin® 20: 5 mL to 20 mL samples
Corning® Spin-X® Concentrators
Corning® Spin-X® ultrafiltration centrifugal concentrators offer a simple, one step procedure for concentrating or desalting proteins and other biomolecules with 90% or better recovery. An integrated dead stop eliminates risk of spinning to dryness. Low binding polyethersulfone (PES) membranes are available with five molecular weight cut-offs (MWCO): 5,000, 10,000, 30,000, 50,000 and 100,000 Da.
Centrisart® I Centrifugal Ultrafiltration Devices
Centrisart® I centrifugal devices were developed for small volume (≤2.5 mL) ultrafiltration of very viscous or particle-containing liquids such as serum or blood samples. A unique design permits ultrafiltration in the opposite direction to the centrifugal force. This minimizes membrane fouling even with particle laden solutions or cell lysate samples.
Cellulose Acetate Membrane Centrifugal Filters
Corning® CoStar® Spin-X® Centrifuge Tube Filters with Cellulose Acetate Membranes
These centrifuge tube filters are available with cellulose acetate (CA) membranes with 0.22 μm or 0.45 μm membrane pore sizes. The filter unit capacity is 500 μL.
- Cellulose acetate (CA) membranes provide fast flow rates and low protein binding

Swab Recovery Centrifugal Devices
Isohelix Spin+Collect™ Devices
The Isohelix Spin+Collect™ device increases sample yields from swabs and other materials. The device firmly grips the swab or other material while exposing maximal surface area for the first step of elution or lysis of the sample. A 1.5 mL microfuge tube is then fitted as a cap and inverted for centrifugation and final release of any sample trapped in the matrix.
