Application

Glycine has been used to quench unreacted aldehyde during sample (nuclei) preparation for scanning electron microscope.[1] It has also been used for sample fixation in the process of immunolabeling.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Inhibitory neurotransmitter in spinal cord, allosteric regulator of NMDA receptors.
Glycine is a non-essential amino acid.[3] Influx of calcium through the cell membrane is mediated by glycine-gated channel. Glycine participates in the synthesis of porphyrins, purine and serine. It also serves as a competitive agonist for glutamate in binding to the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors.[4] Glycine synthesis might be increased in rapidly proliferating cancer cells, due to increased demand for the amino acid.[3]
