General description

Glycine is the simplest amino acid building block.

Application

Glycine has been used in whole-cell patch clamp recording to measure inward NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) currents.[1] It has also been used as a model organic system in crystallography to demonstrate a novel acoustic nebulization platform.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Glycine is a non-essential amino acid.[3] Influx of calcium through the cell membrane is mediated by glycine-gated channel. Glycine participates in the synthesis of porphyrins, purine and serine. It also serves as a competitive agonist for glutamate in binding to the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors.[4] Glycine synthesis might be increased in rapidly proliferating cancer cells, due to increased demand for the amino acid.[3]
Inhibitory neurotransmitter in spinal cord, allosteric regulator of NMDA receptors.
