Gene Information

Application

Selective inhibitor of COX−1.
Resveratrol has been used:
  • in entrapment experiment
  • to study its neuroprotective effect on retinal neuronal cell death mediated by diabetes-induced activation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II
  • as a standard in the assessment of stilbene content in grapevine leaf by in vivo fluorometry

Biochem/physiol Actions

Resveratrol is a phenolic phytoalexin found in grape skin and other plants. It has intracellular antioxidant activity and activates sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent histone deacetylase involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and the enhancement of peroxisome proliferator-g-activated receptor coactivator-1a (PGC-1a) and FOXO (forkhead box) activity. The anti-diabetic, neuroprotective and anti-adipogenic actions of resveratrol may be mediated via SIRT1 activation. Resveratrol has antiviral action against Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV1) and HSV2. It also exhibits antitumor and phytoestrogenic biological activities. Resveratrol is known to prolong life in many species by mediating several physiological events.

Preparation Note

Soluble in ethanol, DMSO, and acetone. Only very slightly soluble in water (3 mg/100 mL).

Questions

1–10 of 11 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.
For more information, please refer to the Product Dating Information document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/418/501/product-dating-information-06-25-mk.pdf

  2. Can a resveratrol solution turn red?

    1 answer
    1. Solubility is tested in acetone, resulting in a faint yellow color. In acidic conditions, resveratrol can appear more reddish. In neutral or alkaline conditions, resveratrol will appear yellowish or colorless. Oxidation of resveratrol may also change its color, potentially leading to a reddish hue. Resveratrol is highly oxidizable and reacts readily with reactive oxygen species.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. What is the solubility limit in ethanol ?

    1 answer
    1. This product is tested for solubility in acetone at 50 mg/mL. It is soluble in ethanol at 50 mg/mL and in DMSO at 16 mg/mL.

      Helpful?

  5. does it expires? How long does powder last?

    1 answer
    1. This product is not assigned an expiration date or recommended retest date. Products with no expiration date or recommended retest date should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected. These products are also subject to a one year warranty from the date of shipment. For more information you may access the "Product Dating Information" document under "ADDITIONAL USEFUL DOCUMENTS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS" at the bottom of the Quality Services page with this link: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/life-science/quality-and-regulatory-management/quality-services.
