General description

Brassicasterol is a plant sterol, sharing similar structure with cholesterol.[1] It is obtained through the dietary sources,[1] including sea food.[2]

Application

  • Deciphering the effect of phytosterols on Alzheimer′s disease and Parkinson′s disease: the mediating role of lipid profiles: This research demonstrates the neuroprotective potential of phytosterols, including Brassicasterol, in modulating lipid profiles to mitigate symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer′s and Parkinson′s (Guo et al., 2024).

  • Liposomal Phytosterols as LDL-Cholesterol-Lowering Agents in Diet-Induced Hyperlipidemia: Discusses the effectiveness of Brassicasterol and other phytosterols encapsulated in liposomes for reducing LDL cholesterol, showcasing a potential therapeutic approach in hyperlipidemia management (Poudel et al., 2023).

  • Sterol Regulation of Development and 20-Hydroxyecdysone Biosynthetic and Signaling Genes in Drosophila melanogaster: Highlights the role of Brassicasterol in regulating developmental and hormonal pathways in model organisms, suggesting implications for developmental biology studies (Wen et al., 2023).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Brassica sterol in cerebrospinal fluid might serve as an indicator for Alzheimer′s disease.[1] It is found in rapeseed oil. Brassicasterol is thus, useful in identifying brassica oil and contamination of rapeseed and canola oil in others.[3] Plant sterols can penetrate through the blood brain barrier.[4]
