General description

6-Benzylaminopurine, benzyl adenine (BAP) is a synthetic cytokinin.[1]

Application

6-Benzylaminopurine solution has been used as a component in the Murashige & Skoog medium (MS) for culturing mandarin explants[2] and plantlets of Dendrocalamus asper (Schultes f.).[3] It has also been used as a supplement in Nitsch and Nitsch medium (NN) of grapevine explants[4],

Biochem/physiol Actions

6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) is used as a cytokinin supplement to plant growth medium[1] It increases post-harvest life of green vegetables by preventing chlorophyll degradation.[5] It is used in micropropagation. However, in some plants, BAP leads to inhibition in growth and root formation. BAP phenyl ring based derivatives are widely used to test their anti-cancer effects[6]
