Description

General description

Nystatin is a fungistatic and fungicidal polyene antibiotic. It binds to ergosterol which increases cell membrane permeability in sensitive fungi.[1] Nystatin is mainly clinically active against Candida species.[2] However, it is also reported to be effective against Aspergillus, Coccidioides immitis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatidis, and other yeasts and fungi.[3] Nystatin has also been used to enrich mutants by negative selection in yeasts.[4] The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Nystatin to Saccharomyces cerevisiae was reported to be 3μg/ml [5] while for clinical isolates of Candida albicans the MIC was reported to be 4-16μg/ml.[6]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mode of Action: Nystatin acts by binding to ergosterols in fungal cell membranes, increasing permeability of the membrane, and creating nystatin/ergosterol based ion channels. It also functions as a lipid raft-inhibiting reagent and as membrane associated cholesterol.

Antimicrobial spectrum: Nystatin acts against fungi, yeasts and molds.
