General description

Diethyl ether is a highly volatile and flammable organic solvent.[1] On storing for a long time, DEE can form organic peroxides, which can be suppressed by adding butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) as a stabilizer. BHT scavenges the free radicals required for the peroxide formation.

Application

Diethyl ether has been used as a solvent for the preparation of 3-formyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-oxy-pyrroline from 3-(N-methoxy-N-methylcarbamoyl)-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-oxy-pyrroline using DIBAL.[2]
