General description

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is an affordable chelating agent. It is an aminopolycarboxylic acid and a hexadentate ligand and forms octahedral complex with cations. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is not recommended for phytoremediation as it can leach into natural water resources. It is used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry. It triggers platelet aggregation in pseudothrombocytopenia. In chelation therapy, it elicits protection from oxidative damage during blood and lipid peroxidation and may be useful to treat cardiovascular and carbon tetrachloride induced liver fibrosis.

Application

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid may be used:
  • as a component of staining buffer
  • as buffer component for incubating epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM+) cells with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated antibody for cell sorting studies
  • for treating epithelial cells for isolation of mucosal myofibroblasts
