General description

Coptisine chloride is a cytotoxic isoquinoline alkaloid.[1] It is the major bioactive compound of Coptis rhizome[2], and can also be found in different plants such as Chelidonium majus[3], Enantia chlorantha.[1] Coptisine is related to berberine[3] and has a similar structure to that of Jatrorrhizine.[1]

Application

Coptisine Chloride has been used to study its binding interactions with single-stranded poly(A) using different absorbance and thermal melting spectroscopic experiments.[1] It may have been used as a standard to analyze Chelidonium majus L. extracted compounds using UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy.[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Coptisine Chloride is a potent anti-malarial compound[2], which also exerts anti-cancer and anti-diabetic properties.[1] It elicits protective effects on gastric mucus membrane and is used as a traditional medicine against gastroenteric diseases.[1] Coptisine chloride also displays anti-microbial activities.[4]It has been analyzed as a cytotoxic agent in hepatoma and leukemic cells and is reported to block cell cycle progression.
