ジメチルスルホキシド(DMSO)は極性の有機溶媒です。様々な求電子試薬(塩化オキサリル)により活性化されたDMSOは多様なアルコール(1級、2級、アリル、ベンゾイル、ヒンダードおよび二環式)の酸化に用いられています。カルボニル化合物が反応産物として生成されます。非常に安定性が高いことにより、ニンヒドリン反応に用いるメチルセロソルブの代替溶媒として提唱されています。
