Application

Dexamethasone is used to study apoptosis, cell signaling pathways, cell differentiation[1] and gene expression.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Glucocorticoid anti-inflammatory agent
Glucocorticoid anti-inflammatory agent. Regulates T cell survival, growth, and differentiation. Inhibits the induction of nitric oxide synthase.
It is poorly metabolized in the body and has great affinity and bioavailability.

Packaging

Bottomless glass bottle. Contents are inside inserted fused cone.

Physical form

powder 2-8 °C; stock-frozen in working aliquots, avoid repeated freeze/thaw

Preparation Note

To prepare 20 μg/ml stock solution, add 1ml absolute ethanol per mg product; gently swirl to dissolve. Add 49 ml sterile medium per ml of ethanol added, while mixing, to acheive final concentration of 20 μg/ml.

The stability upon reconstitution has not been determined. However, for a similar product, it is recommended to aliquot and freeze at -20°C after reconstitution. Stock solutions are stable for up to 2 months at -20°C and should be protected from light. Degradation occurs gradually and depends on exposure frequency and intensity. Discolored, cloudy, or particulate-containing solutions should be discarded. Solutions can be sterile filtered using a 0.22 µm membrane, as the powders are not sterile.

  3. Hello,  I prepared a solution of Dexamethasone in DMSO and PBS for IP injection in mice for 20 days daily. Is it okay to store the solution at 4°C?

However, an analytical standard available at 1 mg/mL in methanol, as product D-085, has a shelf life of 4 years when stored at -20°C. In addition, therapeutic preparations of Dexamethasone 3.3 mg/mL for injection manufactured by Hospira, list a shelf life of 24 months at -20°C. This product, in solution, may demonstrate similar stability.

  7. I read that the dexamethasone is packaged in a bottomless glass bottle, in an inserted fused cone. Is this cone sealed with a rubber lid to be able to safely open the bottle and dissolve all contents before fully opening the bottle?

    1. Please see the attached images of the vial and cap used to package this product. The cap is a screw-type and does not include a septum. Threading secures the inner cone to the outer vial.
