General description

β-estradiol is a natural human estrogen. It is vital for the growth of breast and reproductive epithelia, maturation of long bones and development of secondary sexual characteristics. Estradiol is produced by immature germ cells, spermatozoa, Leydig cells and Sertoli cells. β-estradiol acts as a menopausal hormones. It is involved in replacement therapy for female hypogonadism or primary ovarian failure. Reduced levels of β-estradiol are linked to heart disease and osteoporosis. Estradiol plays a critical role in proliferation, modulation of ion transport and control of apoptosis in Sertoli cells. It maintains sperm concentration, motility and morphology.


β-estradiol has been used:
  • to culture differentiated adipocytes
  • for estradiol treatment in rats
  • for oocyte maturation in vitro
β-Estradiol is used to study cell differentiation and transformations (tumorigenicity). This product is not recommended for use in binding assays.

  5. How do I calculate the molarity of product E4389, β-Estradiol - Water Soluble?

    Product E4389 (β-Estradiol-Water Soluble) is a complex of β-Estradiol and cyclodextrin. Cyclodextrin is used to aid in the solubility of β-Estradiol into water. In order to prepare a molar solution of β-Estradiol you will have to base it on the β-Estradiol content in the solution and not the entire complex.  Product E4389 is formulated to contain 40 - 55 mg β-Estradiol per gram of powder (we will use 48 mg in the example).  Based on this average, if you are preparing a 25 mg/ml stock solution, there will be approximately 1.2 mg of β-Estradiol in 1 ml.  Below is the calculated molarity of β-Estradiol when the complex is dissolved at 25 mg/ml in water. molecular weight X unknown molarity X volume = complex weight X complex ratio272.38 g/mol X Molarity X 1 ml = 25 mg X 0.048          Molarity = 0.004 M β-Estradiol molecular weight = 272.38 g/molmolarity (unknown) = mol/Lvolume = 1mlcomplex weight = 25 mgcomplex ratio = 48 mg β-Estradiol/1 gm complex
