General description

This product is provided as delivered and specified by the issuing Pharmacopoeia. Dextran 40 is primarily composed of glucose units linked together, with the predominant type of linkage being α-1:6. It is obtained through controlled breakdown and separation of certain polysaccharides that are synthesized when certain strains of Leuconostoc mesenteroides bacteria ferment sucrose. Dextran 40 has a weight average molecular weight within the range of 35,000 to 45,000.

Application

Dextran 40 USP reference standard for use in specified quality tests and assays.

Also used to prepare a system suitability solution during optical and specific rotation of Dextran 40 by liquid chromatography method coupled to a Refractive index detector.
