General description

BSA is a single polypeptide chain consisting of about 583 amino acid residues and no carbohydrates. At pH 5-7 it contains 17 intrachain disulfide bridges and 1 sulfhydryl group.

Application

BSA 30% solution is a convenient form for direct supplementation of serum-free media. Bovine serum albumin is broadly used as an additive to cell culture media, especially serum-free media. It provides a range of benefits including protection from oxidative damage and stabilization of other media components such as fatty acids and pyridoxal.

Preparation Note

Prepared from A9647 in DPBS (D5652).

Albumin in Cell Culture

This page segues to comprehensive insights on how serum albumin and other important cell culture components affect the performance of serum-free cell culture systems used for biomanufacturing heterologous proteins including monoclonal antibodies. The page introduces the in vitro chemistry and biochemistry of albumin. These insights may also be applied to ex vivo and tissue engineering applications.
