Colecalciferol is a fat soluble vitamin, which participates in the calcium and phosphate metabolism. It is sourced either through the diet or by exposing skin to ultraviolet rays. Oral administration of vitamin D3 is readily absorbed and is stored in adipose tissue.

Application

Colecalciferol BP Reference standard, intended for use in laboratory tests only as specifically prescribed in the British Pharmacopoeia.

Also used in monographs such as:

  • Alendronic Acid and Colecalciferol Tablets

  • Colecalciferol Injection

  • Paediatric Vitamins A, C and D Oral Drops

  • Colecalciferol Tablets

  • Calcium and Colecalciferol Chewable Tablets

  • Calcium and Ergocalciferol Tablets

  • Calcium and Ergocalciferol Chewable Tablets

  • Ergocalciferol Tablets

  • Calcium and Colecalciferol Tablets
  • Biochem/physiol Actions

Vitamin D acts through a receptor that is a member of the ligand-dependent transcription factor superfamily. Modulates the proliferation and differentiation of both normal and cancer cells. Has antiproliferative and antimetastatic effects on breast, colon, and prostate cancer cells. Activated vitamin D receptors in intestine and bone maintain calcium absorbance and homeostasis.
