Application

Folic acid has been used:
  • to study the role of vitamins and amino acids on hybridoma growth and monoclonal antibody production[1]
  • in cells and treatments[2]
  • in perforin gene targeting using the CRISPR/Cas gene editing approach[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

A nutritional delivery form of folate. Folic acid and its derivatives are essential mediators of one-carbon metabolism within cells.

General description

Folic acid (FA)/pterylmonoglutamic acid[4] helps to block neural tube defects (NTDs).[5]

Questions

1–5 of 5 Questions
  1. Is it better to store folic acid (Product No. F8758) solution at RT or -20'C? Also, how long is it stable as a solution for at recommended temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Solution stability has not been determined for this product, however commercial and pharmaceutical preparations are cited as being stable at room temperature for up to 18 months, protected from light. Folic acid is also a component of most of the classical DMEM media formulations, for example D5546. These products are also assigned a shelf life of 18 months, but are stored at 2 - 8 deg. C. Storing at -20 deg. C may or may not extend the shelf life. There is a possibility that the freeze/thaw process may result in precipitation and may be detrimental.

  2. What is the stability of folic acid (Product No. F8758) once in solution?

    1 answer
    1. This product is photolabile and is inactivated by UV light. Alkaline solutions are reasonably stable in the dark, but heating will destroy both alkaline and acidic solutions.

  3. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.

  4. What is the solubility of folic acid (Product No. F8758)?

    1 answer
    1. Product No. F8758 is soluble in 1 M NaOH (50 mg/mL). The free acid is only slightly soluble in water (0.01 mg/mL at 0 °C), and is insoluble in aqueous solutions below pH 5. It is soluble in sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydroxide solutions.

      Helpful?

  5. Is Product No. F8758, Folic Acid, tested for endotoxins?

    1 answer
    1. No, Product No. F8758 has not been tested for endotoxins. This product has, however, been tested for use in mammalian cell culture and insect cell culture.
