Analytical Method for Manganese (total) in Effluents

The Spectroquant® Manganese Test enables quantification of the manganese(II) ions in effluent samples. In alkaline solutions, manganese(II) ions react with an oxime to form a red-brown complex that is measured photometrically.

Instruments and Reagents Required

Spectroquant® VIS Spectrophotometer Prove 100 (Product No. 173016) or
Spectroquant® UV/VIS Spectrophotometer Prove 300 (Product No. 173017) or

Rectangular cells 50 mm (Product No. 114944)
Spectroquant® Manganese Cell Test (Product No. 100816)
Spectroquant® Manganese Test (Product No. 114770)
Spectroquant® Manganese Test (Product No. 101846)
Hydrochloric acid 37 % for analysis (Product No. 100317)
Sodium hydroxide solution 1 mol/l (Product No. 109137)
Universal Indicator strips pH 0 - 14 (Product No. 109535)
Water for analysis (Product No. 116754)

Sample preparation:

  1. In a glass beaker, mix 25 mL of sample solution with 5 mL hydrochloric acid 37 % and evaporate almost to dryness on the heating plate. Dissolve the residue in water for analysis and transfer to a 25-mL volumetric flask.
  2. While there is still room in the flask, check the pH with the Universal Indicator strips. The ideal range is pH 3 - 10; if necessary adjust the pH with sodium hydroxide solution 1 mol/l. Immediately after, fill the flask to the mark with water for analysis and mix well.

Analysis:

Determine with the Spectroquant® manganese test kits.

Calculation:

Manganese (total) content in mg/l Mn = analysis value in mg/l Mn
