General description

Sodium hydroxide also known as caustic soda is a water soluble base with a wide range of industrial applications. Purification of diatomite with NaOH enhances its ability to adsorb basic dyes.[1] NaOH when coupled with thermal desorption is reported to improve the degradation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in PCB contaminated soil.[2] The efficiency of the aqueous solution of sodium citrate (Na3Ci) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to dissolve SO2 has been investigated.[3]

Application

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) has been used to trap the hydrogen bromide gas released during the photo-bromination of 4-nitro-o-xylene.[2]
It may be used in the following processes:
  • Boehm′s titration[4]
  • dissolution testing[5]
  • pH adjustment during the silver nanoparticles synthesis[6]
