Opis ogólny

OSBPL8 (oxysterol binding protein-like 8), also called as OSBP-related protein 8 (ORP8) is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and binds to 25-hydroxycholesterol. It is predominantly expressed in macrophages, liver, spleen, kidney, and brain.

OSBPL8 (oxysterol binding protein-like 8) gene encodes a protein belonging to the oxysterol-binding protein (OSBP) family. The members of this family contain a pleckstrin homology domain at the N-terminus and a highly conserved OSBP-type sterol-binding domain at the C-terminal region. The protein inhibits ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) expression and prevents macrophage cholesterol efflux, regulating the development of atherosclerosis.
