General description

Potassium iodide (KI) is an inorganic potassium salt. It is used as an iodide ion source for nucleophilic displacement reactions and acts as a mediator during the electrochemical oxidations of aldehydes. In presence of an acid, KI cleaves some ethers. KI reacts with sulfonyl chlorides to produce symmetrical thiosulfonic S-esters. In the presence of oxidizing agents, KI iodinates aromatic compounds and organothallium compounds.

Application

Potassium iodide is used:
  • As a solid base catalyst loaded with alumina for transesterification of soybean oil with methanol.
  • As a iodide source in the solvothermal synthesis of BiOI (bismuth oxyiodide) microspheres using ethylene glycol solvent.
  • In the synthesis of RGO (reduced graphene oxide) from GO (graphite oxide) in presence of HCl–KI mixture.
