General description

Chloroform is used in pharmaceutical preparations as an anesthetic and as an additive. It is now mainly used as an organic solvent. Chloroform is produced by anthropogenic and natural sources. This abundant halocarbon in the atmosphere is found in ground and surface water sources.

Application

Chloroform has been used in phenol-chloroform extraction to find its ability to purify nucleic acids from blood culture fluids. It has also been used in RNA extraction/isolation and purification.
