It exists as a tetramer with each monomer having heterocyclic porphyrin ring with iron constituting the heme.

Bovine hemoglobin interacts with synthetic and azo dyes. Polymerized forms of bovine hemoglobin are used to treat autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
