Chemists have been able to manipulate graphene by enhancing its processibility and versatility. It is possible to tailor graphene, using covalent or supramolecular chemistry, into a variety of forms ranging from simple soluble sheets to hierarchical architectures where 2-dimensional (2D) graphene sheets are assembled into three-dimensional (3D) composite materials or foams. These materials have applications in electronics, mechanics, energy storage and catalysis.
In addition to graphene, Prof. Palermo demonstrates the exfoliation of layered materials such as BN, MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, etc. that have complementary conductive, semiconductive and insulating properties paving the way for new composite 2D metamaterials.
Moreover, self-standing and robust nanosheets featuring a large variety of chemical structures can be obtained from the polymerization of small molecules through directional 2D crystallization or cross-linking of self-assembled monolayers.
These different approaches provide unlimited possibilities for the creation of 2D structures inspired by graphene.
Prof. Vincenzo Palermo
Prof. Vincenzo Palermo is the leader of the research unit “Functional Organic Materials” of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). In his work, he uses nanotechnology and supramolecular chemistry to create materials based on organic semiconductors and graphene for electronics and energy applications. He is one of the founders of the GRAPHENE FLAGSHIP European initiative, and the leader of the flagship work package on nanocomposites. He has authored more than 100 papers on ISI journals and has given more than 50 invited talks at international conferences in the past 5 years. He has been the project leader of two large European research projects: GOSPEL (Graphene-Organic SuPramolEcular functionaL composites) and the International Training Network GENIUS (GraphenE-orgaNIc hybrid architectures for organic electronics: a mUltiSite training action). Prof. Palermo is the recipient of several awards including the Lecturer Award for Excellence of the Federation of European Materials Societies in 2012 and the Research Award of the Italian Society of Chemistry (SCI) in 2013.
