To accurately determine the concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) collected on Thermal Desorption tubes (TD tubes), a calibration curve must be established with the thermal desorption gas chromatography system.
As more laboratories switch to using multi-bed TD tubes so they can collect a broader range of volatile compounds, the technique of spiking calibration standards on multi-bed tubes becomes more critical. Because multi-bed TD tubes include stronger adsorbents that capture very volatile compounds; these adsorbents will also retain the solvent of a liquid phase standard. The adsorbed solvent is subsequently desorbed into the gas chromatograph, and this can cause separation problems and detection of the early eluting analytes. Using compressed gas standards eliminates the problem associated with spiking multi-bed TD tubes with liquid phase standards. This webinar will provide the details of a proper spiking technique.
