A4GNT (α-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase) gene encodes an enzyme that belongs to glycosyltransferase 32 family and is expressed predominantly in stomach and pancreas, as well as in gastric cancer cells. A4GNT facilitates the biosynthesis of mucin type glycoprotein (O-glycan) as well as mediates the transfer of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) to core 2 branched O-glycans with α1,4-linkage, forming GlcNAcα1,4Galβ residues. Further, α4GnT mRNA expressed in mononuclear cell fraction of peripheral blood assists as a biomarker for pancreatic cancer.
